If your work does not speak for itself, it will not survive. Art is alive. It needs to be able to have a voice in the lives of the viewer. The voice that your artwork carries must coincide with who you are as an artist. I believe that for artists, our work is somewhat like a diary. My work often tells my story but I am growing as an artist as I learn how to look outside of myself for inspiration. For me, painting is a way of releasing what is going on inside of me. Sometimes it is my spontaneous work that ends up being better because it is more truthful. When I am loosened up and am in a relaxed state, my artwork tends to be more about what I am really feeling and also more about how I relate to the rest of the world. These are the pieces I treasure most. I create art because it is second nature to me. I have never have to decide, “should I create?” the question has always been, “what should I create?”
I was able to help Sharon Hill at the JMU recruitment booth at the Virginia Art Education Association Conference this year. I also was a part of the JMU faculty team to present at the Conference. The conference was Oct. 30- Nov. 2
