James Madison University Art Education Masters Program
The Master of Arts in art education requires a minimum of 30 credit hours. The candidate must have an undergraduate degree with a minimum of 33 credit hours in studio art and nine credit hours in art history. The art history hours must include six hours surveying the history of Western art and three hours in upper-level art history. The candidate must have an art-teaching license and submit three letters of recommendation, a teaching philosophy, a sample lesson plan, and a personal statement as an indication of preparation for graduate study in a teaching portfolio. The GRE is not required in lieu of a passing Praxis II score or evidence of a valid teaching license.
As part of my course work in the Art Education Masters program, I chose a graduate level course in developing instructional technology. The course "Design and Development of Digital Media" (LTLE 570) has been the perfect choice for me to gain a much more in depth understanding of digital media and how it can be used in education. Many of the projects I completed for the course will appear in my own thesis as it relates to using technology in an art classroom.

"This class is a “hands-on” course that requires your active participation. It is about making and doing rather than passively listening and observing. The content of this course is drawn from several areas - visual communication, instructional design, educational psychology, human-computer interaction, and instructional media development, so we will be reading and researching in these different content areas throughout the semester." -Diane Wilcox, Instructor
